Cabbage belongs to the Brassica or crucifer family of vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts also belong to that family as well as green, red, chinese and many other variety of cabbage. When it comes to cooking this family of vegetable the variety of recipes is as rich as the variety in that vegetable, we can eat them raw or cooked, accompanied by any kind of sauce imaginable.

But what makes cabbage interesting are its medicinal virtues.

First cabbage is rich in fiber to regulate intestinal functions. Cabbage is rich in vitamin U, which help in healing damage mucous, in particular that of stomach ulcers.

Cabbage is rich in vitamins, chlorophyl and minerals. It helps in the production of red blood cells and is therefore good for people suffering from anemia.

Eating raw cabbage leaves is effective in treating bronchitis and other light pulmonary infections, as well as easing pain associated with arthritis.

Here are some recipes for green cabbage that comes from my grand-mother who always advocated the addition of cabbage not only to our diet, but as a way to heal at home many ailments. These tips are not to replace any medical treatment that you should seek in case of serious illness.

Green cabbage leaf poultice, to help in case of rheumatism and ulcers.

Take as many raw leaves (washed and dried) from a green cabbage, that are needed to cover the area to be treated.

Roll the leaves (from which you have removed the stalk) with a rolling pin to extract the juice.

Place the leaves on the joint, or the ulcer as long as there is no infection, cover with gauze compress and bandage. Keep it in place for 2 or more hours.

Cabbage and honey cough syrup

Extract the juice from raw cabbage leaves, boil this juice with an equal quantity of honey. Skim and use. 3 to 4 teaspoon per day is the recommended dosage. No side effects from this natural cough medication recipe, but do consult a doctor if symptoms are severe or are lasting.

Cabbage Soup Recipe For 6 To 8 Servings

1 cabbage, 1/2 pound of tomatoes, the juice of one lemon, 2 onions, 3/4 pound of potatoes, 2 apples, 1/4 cup of raisins, salt and pepper, 2 fat free bouillon cubes. Peel and wash all the vegetables, slice the onions, dice the other vegetables, and cut the cabbage in thin strips. Blanch the cabbage strip in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Drain.

Fill a cooking pot (to the 3/4 mark) with water, allow the bouillon cubes to melt. then add the peeled and diced tomatoes, the lemon juice, onions, and cabbage. Add salt and pepper. Let cook for about 30 minutes, add apples and raisins. Let cook gently another 1/2 hour. Serve hot.

This hearty cabbage soup recipe is delicious accompanied with a red fruit milk-shake.
